How to Remove EXIF Data from iPhone Photos
iPhone photos contain extensive EXIF metadata, including GPS coordinates, camera details, and timestamps. Apple has added some built-in tools for managing this data, but they have significant limitations.
What EXIF Data Do iPhone Photos Contain?
An iPhone photo typically includes GPS coordinates, camera model, lens information, exposure settings, depth information, HDR information, timestamps, software version, and image orientation.
Method 1: iOS Built-in Location Removal
Since iOS 13, you can remove location data when sharing:
- Open Photos app
- Select the photo(s) you want to share
- Tap the Share button
- Tap Options at the top of the share sheet
- Toggle Location to Off
- Share the photo
Limitations: Only removes GPS data — camera model, timestamps, and other metadata remain.
Method 2: Remove Location from a Single Photo
In iOS 17+, you can remove location from a saved photo:
- Open the photo in Photos
- Swipe up or tap the (i) button
- Tap Adjust next to the location
- Tap No Location
Limitations: Only removes GPS — all other EXIF data remains.
Method 3: Disable Geotagging Entirely
- Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services
- Find Camera in the list
- Select Never
Limitations: Doesn’t affect existing photos.
Method 4: Use Our Free Online Tool (Recommended)
For complete EXIF removal from iPhone photos:
- Open our EXIF remover in Safari or Chrome on your iPhone
- Select or drag your photos
- See all the metadata your photos contain
- Tap “Clean” to remove everything
- Download the cleaned photos
Advantages: Removes ALL metadata, not just GPS. No app installation required. Files processed locally. Works with HEIC photos.
HEIC vs JPEG on iPhone
iPhone photos are saved in HEIC format by default (since iOS 11). Our tool handles HEIC files automatically — it converts them to JPEG while removing all metadata.
To change your iPhone to shoot in JPEG: Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible
